Electric Commutators: what they are and how they work

Navigation index

What is an electrical switch?

An electrical commutator is an electronic device that can be used to control and manage the flow of current in an electrical circuit. It can be used to turn on and off devices connected to the electrical circuit, as well as to regulate voltage or current. Electric switches come in different types, such as toggle, push-button, rocker, and rotary switches.

How do electrical switches work?

Electrical switches work by making current flow in an electrical circuit. When the switch is turned on, current flows through the connected circuit. When the switch is turned off, the current is cut off and the circuit is deactivated. Also, some electrical switches can be used to regulate circuit voltage or current. This means that the commutator can be used to regulate the amount of energy that is sent to the circuit and therefore to the connected devices.

Types of electrical switches

Electrical switches can be divided into four main categories: lever, push-button, rocker and rotary.

  • Toggle switches are the most common, toggle switches that can be found in many electrical devices. They are also known as key switches.
  • Pushbutton switches are also called pushbutton switches. They are mostly used in devices such as phones or computers.
  • Rocker switches are similar to toggle switches, but have two sections that can be moved to the side. They are often used to control the speed of an engine.
  • Rotary switches are similar to toggle switches, but have a section that can be rotated to control the amount of current that is sent to the circuit.

Applications of electrical switches

Electrical switches can be used in a variety of applications, including regulating the speed of a motor, turning electrical devices on and off, and regulating voltage or current. Electrical switches are also used in automatic machines, control devices and industrial equipment.
